There is a shattering scene in which wave after wave of Gandhi's followers march forward to be beaten to the ground by British clubs.

Through it all, Gandhi maintains a certain detachment; he is convinced he is right, convinced that violence is not an answer, convinced that sheer moral example can free his nation as it did.

Where would the British cinema be without its dependable, sturdy, absolutely authoritative generation of great character actors like Trevor Howard as a British judge , John Mills the British viceroy , John Gielgud , and Michael Hordern?

Gandhi stands at the quiet center. And Ben Kingsley's performance finds the right note and stays with it. I imagine that for many Americans, Mahatma Gandhi remains a dimly understood historical figure.

I suspect a lot of us know he was a great Indian leader without quite knowing why and such is our ignorance of Eastern history and culture we may not fully realize that his movement did indeed liberate India, in one of the greatest political and economic victories of all time, achieved through nonviolent principles.

What is important about this film is not that it serves as a history lesson although it does but that, at a time when the threat of nuclear holocaust hangs ominously in the air, it reminds us that we are, after all, human, and thus capable of the most extraordinary and wonderful achievements, simply through the use of our imagination, our will, and our sense of right.

Dedicated to the concept of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi is initially dismissed by English officials, including the influential Lord Irwin John Gielgud , but eventually he and his cause become internationally renowned, and his gatherings of passive protest move India towards independence.

View All Critic Reviews Dec 01, As Einstein said about Gandhi, a quote included at the end of this movie, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever, in flesh and blood, walked upon this earth.

However, I have to say, those who focus on these omissions miss all that was absolutely accurate - and truly inspiring - in the film.

This epic movie has beautiful shots of India and is beautiful in spirit. Who can possibly not be moved by this great man, whose simplicity and nonviolent approach to oppression and violence inspired Indians and the world?

He endures beatings without raising a hand, and his moral rectitude and dignity never waver in dealing with the British, his countrymen, and his peers in the 'Home Rule' movement.

He eschews pomp, embraces poverty, and demands authenticity. In testifying in his own defense while on trial, he says simply "Non-cooperation with evil is a duty, and that British rule of India is evil.

Perhaps the most difficult to watch or even fathom is the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, which Attenborough shows us right before the intermission.

The brutality and cruelty of British Colonel Reginald Dyer is staggering, as was his callousness in the inquiries afterwards - and there is no exaggeration in the film.

There are aspects that can be questioned about the film - why a white man was hired to play the part of Gandhi even though Kingsley is fantastic , why Jinnah was portrayed in too negative a light possibly due to the influence of the Indian government, who helped sponsor the film , and why Gandhi was overly idealized.

It's not perfect, and neither was he. However, the truth is that the man was courageous, enlightened, and an awe-inspiring moral beacon to us all.

His words were beautiful - and the film gets all of this right. For companion reading, try 'Mohandas Gandhi Essential Writings', which has a number of fantastic passages, and provides a more complete view of the man.

In the meantime, I highly recommend this movie. Just one more quote, in his speech in front of a packed house, which threatens to become violent in the face of unfair new British Laws: "In this cause, I too am prepared to die; but my friends, there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.

Whatever they do to us, we will attack no one, kill no one, but we will not give our fingerprints, not one of us. They will imprison us, they will fine us, they will seize our possessions, but they cannot take away our self-respect if we will not give it to them.

I am asking you to fight. To fight against their anger, not to provoke it. We will not strike a blow, but we will receive them, and through our pain, we will make them see their injustice, and it will hurt, as all fighting hurts.

But we cannot lose. We cannot.

They rule almost by divine right, shouldering the "white man's burden" even though they have not quite been requested to do so by the Indians.

Gandhi realizes that Indians have been made into second-class citizens in their own country, and he begins a program of civil disobedience that is at first ignored by the British, then scorned, and finally, reluctantly, dealt with, sometimes by subterfuge, sometimes by brutality.

Scenes in this central passage of the movie make it clear that nonviolent protests could contain a great deal of violence.

There is a shattering scene in which wave after wave of Gandhi's followers march forward to be beaten to the ground by British clubs. Reviews Gandhi. Roger Ebert January 01, In watching Gandhi, you will, undoubtedly, gain historical knowledge and social perspective of the time period.

Musically, Attenborough enlisted the greatest sitar player of all time, Ravi Shankar, to score Gandi.

His beautiful and emotional sitar ragas are a delight to hear throughout the movie. Shankar's scoring is a boon to the film's authenticity and atmosphere alike.

I love how Shankar fills the empty air with sweet and endearing Indian classical music played on his steadfast sitar. Shankar's score is the perfect complement to Gandhi's visuals.

Furthermore, the cast, cinematography, score, and direction all yield stellar results for Gandhi. It is as classic as any biopic that has ever been filmed.

All the praise for Kingsley is well earned. I was in the video movie business for years. I've seen all the movies that were in the stores and them some.

Needless to say I got burned out on movies except for some that are exceptional. Gandhi is one that I can watch over and over and never get tired of.

For me its got everything I look for in a film, history, great acting, and a great story. I've been streaming this for years on a couple of video streaming on demand sites.

Its not always included in the free stream libraries so I broke down and bought a new copy. That and I disconnected from all my video streaming stores again.

Its funny because I must have handled 's of these in VHS but never kept one. This movie relates to World Religions in so many ways.

For instance, the four noble truths which is the central teachings of Buddhism; according to this philosophy to live is to suffer.

Suffering is caused by desire. Suffering can be ended. An eightfold path can end suffering and lead one to nirvana liberation truths which was the main purpose for why Gandhi did what he did in this movie.

Gandhi is a representation of the gods Rama. Just like Rama, Gandhi had a wife who followed him everywhere he went and obeyed him.

Gandhi was an astute political campaigner who fought for Indian independence from British rule and for the rights of the Indian poor.

Rama has a high moral standard along with his wife Sita, they are a picture of purity and marital devotion. Rama is the best of upholder of Dharma, the master of the world Ramayana, Rama one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities, the embodiment of chivalry and virtue.

Rama or Ram, also known as Ramachandra, is a major deity of Hinduism. And it teaches us how a man can ruin himself for his own follies and unholy ambitions.

This movie also relates a little bit to Siddharth Gautama. I say this because Gandhi was from London and he lived a pleasant life until he traveled to South Africa where it all begins, after he learned that people of his kind no matter how rich you can be, you are not allowed to do thing that white people do.

He decided to live like his people, and he kept it that way, for each city or country he traveled he adopt to their system. Same as in the world religion book ch.

After a long period of intense fasting he set out for the river and overheard a music teacher explaining to his student about instrument.

Those words brought him to realize the understanding and liberation of suffering this was the principal of the middle way which was fundamental in Buddhism.

Siddharth Gautama was a mere man, not a supernatural being, not a god, he was an extraordinary man who underwent an extraordinary experience.

In my own understanding this movie has a lot of racial slurs in it. People of his kind were not permitted to ride first class even though he told them who he was and how he got the ticket, they told him that in South Africa there are no brown attorney.

Passive resistance only works with a government that has a conscience. Even before the US has been facing an empire within itself that has none.

Corporations with more privilege than persons. The military industrial complex feeding on the youth, feeding on the taxes of all and giving only pain to the world.

What is left for the citizen with a conscience to do? One must separate the myth from the man.
